VideoGuard® Server (VGS) is a scalable solution designed for telcos and cable operators with two-way “always on” networks. This is ideal for both Broadband IP and digital cable platforms that can rely on headend-based content security for live broadcast and on-demand pay-TV services.
VideoGuard Server’s security features are controlled and managed directly from the operator’s headend to the STB and DVR. This avoids the need for smart cards in the set-top box (STB) and enables the use of lower priced thin clients. Security is maintained by dividing the hardware security elements between the headend and STB while harnessing the power of the network. This combination has proved to be a more efficient and scalable solution for two-way IP and cable networks -- both large and small.
VGS is available as a stand-alone content protection system, which can be integrated into a wide range of third party headend technology providers and system integrators, or as part of NDS Metro, the complete end-to-end NDS IPTV Broadband solution.
What VideoGuard Server Does for STBs
VGS is designed to support a wide range of revenue-generating pay-TV business opportunities. These include:
- Subscription services
- VOD (free and subscription) that utilizes both session-based encryption and pre-encryption
- Pay-per-View (PPV) that includes Order Ahead and Impulse Pay-per-View (IPPV)
- DVR supporting standard services and enhanced features such as Network DVR and Archive TV
- Secure content transfer to CE devices such as Portable Media Players (PMPs)
Built-in Security
VGS utilizes security features built into many of the most popular STB decoder chipsets. Because it is combined with robust headend architecture and reliable networking, the result is a solution that is more robust and scalable than software-based alternatives.
VideoGuard Server can be used as part of an end-to-end NDS Metro IPTV solution that includes NDS MediaHighway™ middleware and Electronic Program Guide (EPG), VOD, and DVR.
