Today’s savvy TV consumer wants to watch video everywhere and on any device. As a result, the range of video-capable portable devices is growing rapidly and the best of the world’s broadcasters and mobile operators are offering, or preparing to offer, Mobile TV services. Many of them are adding mobility to existing TV services.
To meet consumer demand, service providers need a reliable system that not only features complete mobile TV functionality, but can also be part of a convergence scenario with existing service platforms.

Standards: Not yet global
While the emergence of Mobile TV is a global phenomenon, the implementation of broadcast mobile standards is currently largely on a regional basis. NDS supports a number of the leading standards:
DVB-H. The most likely of all standards to achieve global penetration. Approved but not yet mandated by the EU with numerous trials in other countries.
STiMi. One of the competitors for recognition as the official standard in China. Not yet deployed.
MediaFLO. Deployed in the US with efforts being made to expand to Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
T-DMB. Deployed in South Korea with a few small deployments elsewhere.
NDS also supports Multicast Broadcast Multimedia System (MBMS) and WiMAX wireless broadband and is able to provide solutions based on multiple standards and multiple platforms.
For each of these possibilities—broadcast/broadband, multiple standards and multiple platforms—the VideoGuard Mobile TV solution offers CA/DRM, metadata management, ESGs, GUIs—as well as DVRs (digital video recorders), an audience measurement system (AMS) and interactive TV (iTV).
Holistic approach
NDS takes a holistic approach to TV, emphasizing the importance of complete systems as well as the interdependence of system components. While many mobile TV services begin in stand-alone mode, NDS believes that mobile TV will be most successful when bundled with other distribution media and offer a converged and rich video entertainment experience.
